Weft-Faced Pattern Weaves: Tabby to Taquete
Published in Paperback by University of Washington Press (July, 1992)
Author: Nancy Arthur Hoskins
Average review score:

Boundweave Bonanza!
The definitive book on boundweave. It is not easy to find any information on boundweave and this book has it all. It covers four harness to sixteen, written in an easy to understand format.

More Boundweave info than you thought existed
This is a large book that is a weavers course in boundweave. The introduction with it's definitions, drafts and excellent diagrams makes sure you know exactly what this weave is all about before starting you on the samples to weave. The author starts with plain weave, 7 different twills, 40 or so pages on rosepath then overshot. You could actually stop there and weave for years. But that isn't even half of the book. There's taquete' & sanitum & more. Terrific!

Wines and Brandies of the Cape of Good Hope: The Definitive Guide to the South African Wine Industry
Published in Hardcover by Stephan Phillips (Pty) Ltd (June, 1998)
Authors: Phyllis Hands, Dave Hughes, and Harry J. Stephan
Average review score:

Wine lover's dream
This has to be one of the best books on wine ever published. The photographs are outstanding and I particularly liked the interviews with wine makers. I can recommend this book to anyone interested in wines, in book layout, in photography AND in the Southern Cape wine reagons. Excellent fare.

STUNNING photography - a must-have for any wine lover!
This is probably the most beautiful book on wine I have ever encountered. I love it! Although it focuses primarily on the South African wine industry, the information on grape growing, winemaking and brandy making is really complete and relevant to any winemaking region. The photography in this book is of the highest quality and is simply breathtaking. Anyone who has visited South Africa will agree that it has probably the most beautiful wine region in the world. This book's pictures tell the same story with excellent photography. Oh and by the way, it is the official textbook of the Cape Wine Academy in South Africa (sure doesn't look like your typical textbook -too colorful and easy to read!) I would recommend this book to ANY wine lover since a lot can be learned from it in a fun way. Makes a stunning 'coffee table' book.

With These Hands
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Bantam Books (29 April, 2003)
Author: Louis L'Amour
Average review score:

L'Amour isn't just about westerns
I bought "With These Hands" on a whim during a trip to a local store. For some time I have had the idea floating around the periphery of my mind to actually read something, anything, from Louis L'Amour. He is immensely popular through his western themed books, most of which are still in print. The back cover of this book says there are 270 million of his books floating around out there. Can you imagine? That blows most of the big boys out of the water. With that knowledge firmly embedded in my mind, I bought "With These Hands" and gave it a whirl. What surprised me about this collection of short stories is that only one is a western. The rest of the stories are highly charged action tales about boxing, crime noir, or WWII. It seems that L'Amour wrote most of these stories years ago for the pulp magazines at the start of his writing career.

The first thing to realize about these stories is that they are not complex tales with sophisticated character development or multi-leveled plots. That is not to say that the underlying ideas of the stories are crude or undeveloped because each story does flow from an interesting theme. What L'Amour gives his readers is unrelenting action delivered with crisp dialogue and a minimum of words. Action stalks through each of these stories like a beast on a rampage. Teeth rocket out of mouths, noses are pulped, gunfire crackles, and bodies fall like rain. Not surprisingly, the boxing stories contain the most descriptive passages of violence. But all of the stories deliver a maximum level of entertainment to those readers looking for action heavy fiction.

The most surprising realization with these stories is that L'Amour does an excellent job writing crime noir yarns. Arguably the best one included here is "Corpse on the Carpet." In this slangy, gritty tale, an ex-boxer named Kipling Morgan happens to show up at a bar at the wrong (or right, depending on what perspective you take) time. He witnesses a smashingly beautiful woman decked out in expensive jewelry pick up a young guy and leave. Intrigued yet concerned that something isn't quite right with this scene, Kip follows the two across town. When our ex-boxer realizes it is a set-up to shake down the guy for money, he steps in and saves the guy from a serious beating. There is no happy ending at this point, as Kip continues to investigate the suspicious events concerning the woman. What follows is the discovery of a murder, a kidnapping, a gang of dangerous thugs on the lam, and fistfights and shootouts. "Corpse on the Carpet" is everything a great short story should be in this genre. It easily matches up with Dashiell Hammett's Continental Op stories.

The several boxing tales in this collection came about from L'Amour's own career as a boxer (!). There is always a little hook in each story to serve as background leading up to the showdown in the ring, such as a boxer seeking revenge (Gloves for a Tiger), or a boxer who sees his victories in a dream (Dream Fighter). The action is where it's at, though. L'Amour mimics a ringside announcer with his blow by blow descriptions of fighters beating each other into hamburger. But it is in these boxing tales that the biggest problem with this collection is most apparent: the author has the annoying tendency to use exclamation marks to the point of distraction. Nearly every sentence describing the fights has one at the end of the sentence, and it gives the story a sometimes irritatingly adolescent atmosphere.

Then there are the war stories, usually centered on an aviator or the captain of a supply ship. Whether dealing with pirates taking advantage of the war to ply their trade (Pirates of the Sky), or heading out on a secret mission in the heart of wartime Japan (Flight to Entebu), L'Amour always gives us a hero, with a glint in his eye and a jaw of steel, to win the day. Expect to see aerial combat, hand-to-hand combat, double-crossing treachery, and high body counts in these war tales.

The odd story out, and the one used for the title of this collection, is strikingly similar to something Jack London would write. In "With These Hands," a plane crash in snow clogged mountains forces the lone surviving passenger, an oil company executive, to reassess his conceptions about life. This story is a real "man vs. nature" tale, with the executive forced to build shelter, hunt game, keep a fire going, and constantly be on the lookout for rescue planes while he tries to stay alive. "With These Hands" is definitely different from the other stories in the collections, but it is just as entertaining as the rest.

"With These Hands" is a fun collection of short stories that are great for passing a few hours. I expect to read a few more of these L'Amour books during the next few months since I do like to read action stories that don't require a lot of thought from time to time. L'Amour died in 1988, but these collections assembled by his family continue to appear with some regularity. Let's hope they keep finding more lost L'Amour treasures.

A great book of short stories
This is a great compilation of stories. What makes it great is that they are not all the same. They jump from a murder mystery to a boxing story to a story of survival. Give it a try you probably won't be disappointed.

Your Hands Can Heal: Learn to Channel Healing Energy

BIBLE OF HEALING
That book is amazing. There is alot of diferent energitic healing methods and a vast of books for the subject, but this the best I've ever read.A small book but contains everything for being a healer, simplest and most efficient methods I've ever seen.No need to take long courses;just read and practice this book.

Your Hands Can Heal
This is just the book that I need right now. I have been studying and practicing Reiki and Secheim for a month, Qigong for a year, and deep meditation for 5 years, where I get down to the delta state within 24 minutes. I have read 100's of good books and a lot of those airy-fairy feel good books that are vague and not practical. This book is practical, logical and truthful! I have not seen provided on the Internet or in books on Reiki , Secheim or Chi Gung, on the depth of procedures that a practitioner can use to channel the universal life force. I belong to 2 Reiki and Secheim circles, where advanced channelers are doing a lot of the techniques that Ric explains in this book, but I could not find in depth explanations of the procedures in any Reiki and Secheim books. Although traditional Reiki is simple, I see a lot of add-ons that the practitioners perform with the healee. Many of the add-ons are found in Ric's book. He explains 4 different methods of healing...sourcing from above, from the earth, from the heart, and from oneness. He explains in depth the colors in auras and what they mean. He explains in-depth aura balancing and the resistance that we all have to our physical, emotional, mental traumas. I welcome all questions, freepaul@pitt.edu

Acrobat 5 Hands-On Training
Published in Paperback by Peachpit Press (15 October, 2002)
Author: Garrick Chow
Average review score:

A great way to learn.
Until I stumbled onto Acrobat 5 H O T (Hands On Training) I had thought the most helpful training books for the Adobe series were the Classroom In A Book series.

I found the authors Garrick Chow and Lynda Weinman to have found an excellent way to get the salient points succinctly put, particularly using the short movies to highlight certain features.

Although I remain a devotee of CIB methods, my library will include the HOT books for all complex software.

Until I purchased Acrobat 5 HOT I had no full appreciation for the capabilities and ease of use of Acrobat.

Chapters 8 through 11, Forms; Indexing and Searching; Document Security; and Creating an Interactive Multimedia Presentation, proved to be the most valuable chapters for me as I have started producing a newsletter for game and small livestock farming and intend to make it net-savvy. Without Acrobat the task would be impossible. Without this book, too daunting.

This book is a must for any one-person e-zine publisher.

Activities for the Abacus: A Hands on Approach to Arithmetic
Published in Paperback by Activities for Learning (September, 1988)
Author: Joan A. Cotter

Brillant book but hard to get!
This is a great book to teach young children mathematics using an abacus. What better way is there to learn math than through hands on experience?

I only wish it was easier to obtain. I checked out a copy through interlibrary loan for a month and I've tried to order it but I have failed to find a copy. I wish the publisher would reprint it.
